Five Years Ago Today!
On November 16, 2018, Elvis Presley was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. A ceremony was held at the White House in the East Room. Graceland CEO Jack Soden accepted the honor from President Donald Trump on behalf of the Presley family.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom, is the most prestigious award, “the Nation’s highest civilian honor, which may be awarded by the President of the United States to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.”
The Presidential Medal of Freedom was established in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy, through Executive Order 11085, with unique and distinctive insignia, and vastly expanded purpose. It superseded the Medal of Freedom that was established by President Harry S. Truman in 1945 to honor civilian service during World War II.
Military Service
Elvis Presley served in the United States military. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1958 during the height of his music career. Elvis Presley completed his basic training at Fort Hood, Texas, and then served in Germany for about 18 months as a member of the 3rd Armored Division. He primarily worked as a tank driver and also continued to pursue his interest in music by recording some. His military service began in March 1958 and ended in March 1960.
During his time in the Army, Elvis was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and received an honorable discharge. His service was a significant event in his life and career, and he continued to pursue his music career after his military service ended.
