Numbers Chapter 3 provides us with an account of the genealogy of Moses, Aaron, and Aaron's sons Nadab and Abihu. The Levites were also joined with them in the administration of the tabernacle instead of all the first-born. In this chapter, we find that the three families of the Levites were numbered and the first-born were also numbered. It is important to note that the first-born numbered more than the Levites, and as a result, some of them were redeemed, and the money was given to Aaron and his sons. The chapter begins by stating that what follows are the generations. The term "generations" could mean either the things done by them or the kindred or family, and in this chapter, it refers to the latter. The subject matter of the chapter is the family of Aaron and the Levites. Moses's family and children are included under the general name of the Amramite, which includes all the children and grandchildren of Amram, with the exception of Aaron and Moses. It is noteworthy that the priesthood was given solely to Aaron's posterity, and hence Aaron is mentioned before Moses, who is commonly named after him in other accounts. The chapter also mentions that Nadab and Abihu were alive when the Lord spoke with Moses in Mount Sinai, although they had died at the time of taking this account. The Levites were chosen to assist the priests in the administration of the tabernacle instead of the first-born. The Levites were divided into three families, namely Gershon, Kohath, and Merari, and each of these families had specific duties concerning the tabernacle. The first-born were numbered and found to be more than the Levites, and so some of them were redeemed. The redemption price for each of them was five shekels, and the money was given to Aaron and his sons as the Lord had commanded. This practice was symbolic of the fact that the first-born belonged to the Lord, but He had chosen the Levites to serve Him instead. This chapter serves to remind us of God's sovereignty in choosing those who will serve Him, and that all things belong to Him.
