BEMIḎBAR (NUMBERS) 5 - SEPARATING FROM SIN

In this chapter...

In the book of Numbers, chapter 5, God commands the Israelites to put away all unclean persons from the camp, and this command is promptly executed. Additionally, there are laws put in place regarding restitution, and an offering is required, particularly of hallowed things, which belong to the priest. Furthermore, the chapter outlines the laws that must be followed in cases of jealousy. If a husband suspects that his wife has been unfaithful, bitter water is to be ordained. This water is designed to reveal the truth of the matter, and if the wife has been unfaithful, she will be cursed. The chapter highlights the importance of purity and the severity of sin. God is holy, and His people are called to live holy lives. Therefore, anyone who defiles the camp must be removed. This act of removing the unclean shows that the people of God are set apart and distinct from the rest of the world. The laws of restitution and offerings also reveal God's desire for His people to live justly. If someone has wronged another, they must make amends and offer a sacrifice as a symbol of their repentance. By doing so, they demonstrate their commitment to righteousness and obedience to God's law. Finally, the laws of jealousy reveal the importance of trust and faithfulness in relationships. God takes the marriage covenant seriously, and He commands that spouses remain faithful to one another. The bitter water ceremony serves as a test of this faithfulness and is designed to expose any wrongdoing. Numbers chapter 5 teaches us about the importance of holiness, justice, and faithfulness. These are fundamental principles that underpin the covenant relationship between God and His people. By obeying these laws, the Israelites demonstrated their commitment to living as a holy and righteous people. Similarly, as modern-day believers, we are called to follow in their footsteps and live our lives in a way that reflects God's character and His desires for His people.

BEMIḎBAR (NUMBERS) 4 - DUTIES OF THE PRIESTS

In this chapter...

Numbers chapter 4 gives us an account of God's commands to Moses regarding the numbering of the Levites, who were responsible for the service of the tabernacle. The chapter provides details on the ages at which the Levites were to be numbered, their specific duties, and the numbers of each clan. God instructed Moses to number the Levites who were between the ages of thirty and fifty, as they were deemed fit for the service of the tabernacle. The duties of the Levites were divided among three clans: the Kohathites, the Gershonites, and the sons of Merari. The Kohathites were responsible for the care and transportation of the most holy objects in the tabernacle, including the ark of the covenant, the table of showbread, the lampstand, and the altars. They were to be numbered from the age of thirty until the age of fifty, and their number was 2,750. The Gershonites were tasked with the care and transportation of the curtains and coverings of the tabernacle, as well as the screens for the entrance to the tabernacle courtyard. They were also to be numbered from the age of thirty until the age of fifty, and their number was 2,630. The sons of Merari were responsible for the care and transportation of the frames, bases, and other supporting structures of the tabernacle. They were also to be numbered from the age of thirty until the age of fifty, and their number was 3,200. Overall, the total number of Levites between the ages of thirty and fifty who were responsible for the service of the tabernacle was 8,580. It is important to note that this number only includes those who were able to serve, and not the entire population of Levites.

BEMIḎBAR (NUMBERS) 3 - THE CENSUS OF THE LEVITES

In this chapter...

Numbers Chapter 3 provides us with an account of the genealogy of Moses, Aaron, and Aaron's sons Nadab and Abihu. The Levites were also joined with them in the administration of the tabernacle instead of all the first-born. In this chapter, we find that the three families of the Levites were numbered and the first-born were also numbered. It is important to note that the first-born numbered more than the Levites, and as a result, some of them were redeemed, and the money was given to Aaron and his sons. The chapter begins by stating that what follows are the generations. The term "generations" could mean either the things done by them or the kindred or family, and in this chapter, it refers to the latter. The subject matter of the chapter is the family of Aaron and the Levites. Moses's family and children are included under the general name of the Amramite, which includes all the children and grandchildren of Amram, with the exception of Aaron and Moses. It is noteworthy that the priesthood was given solely to Aaron's posterity, and hence Aaron is mentioned before Moses, who is commonly named after him in other accounts. The chapter also mentions that Nadab and Abihu were alive when the Lord spoke with Moses in Mount Sinai, although they had died at the time of taking this account. The Levites were chosen to assist the priests in the administration of the tabernacle instead of the first-born. The Levites were divided into three families, namely Gershon, Kohath, and Merari, and each of these families had specific duties concerning the tabernacle. The first-born were numbered and found to be more than the Levites, and so some of them were redeemed. The redemption price for each of them was five shekels, and the money was given to Aaron and his sons as the Lord had commanded. This practice was symbolic of the fact that the first-born belonged to the Lord, but He had chosen the Levites to serve Him instead. This chapter serves to remind us of God's sovereignty in choosing those who will serve Him, and that all things belong to Him.

BEMIḎBAR (NUMBERS) 2 - THE CAMP OF ISRAEL

In this chapter...

The book of Numbers is an important historical record that documents the journey of the Israelites from Egypt to the Promised Land. In chapter 2 of Numbers, we learn about the order in which the tribes were to march and camp during their journey. This organization was essential for maintaining order and protecting the Israelites from external threats. The tribes were divided into four groups, each led by a prominent tribe: Judah, Reuben, Ephraim, and Dan. Judah, the largest tribe, was assigned to lead and camp on the east side, along with Issachar and Zebulun. This strategic position allowed them to lead the way and be the first to encounter any potential danger. Reuben, Simeon, and Gad camped on the south side, with the tabernacle following closely behind them. The tabernacle was the central focus of the Israelites' worship, and it was important to protect it at all costs. Therefore, the Levites, who were responsible for the tabernacle, camped around it for added protection. Ephraim, Manasseh, and Benjamin camped on the west side. They were responsible for protecting the rear and ensuring that no one was left behind during the journey. Finally, Dan, Asher, and Naphtali camped on the north side, completing the circle. This division of tribes was not random. It was based on the patriarch Jacob's blessings to his twelve sons in Genesis 49. Judah was blessed to be a leader among his brothers, and his tribe would produce the Messiah. Reuben was the firstborn, but he lost his birthright due to his sin, so his tribe did not lead. Ephraim and Manasseh were the sons of Joseph, who received a double portion of the inheritance, and Dan was blessed as a judge. This chapter highlights the importance of order and organization in achieving success. By dividing the tribes strategically and assigning them specific roles, the Israelites were able to march and camp efficiently, protect themselves from danger, and keep their focus on God. It's a lesson that still holds true today: when we organize ourselves properly, we can accomplish great things.

BEMIḎBAR (NUMBERS) 1 - THE CENSUS OF ISRAEL

In this chapter...

The book of Numbers begins with God's commandment to Moses and Aaron to conduct a census of the Israelites who were fit for war. This is recorded in Numbers 1:1. In order to carry out this task, twelve captains were chosen, with one from each tribe. The names of these captains, along with the number of individuals in each tribe, are listed in Numbers 1:4. The Levites were exempt from this census since they were tasked with taking care of the tabernacle. The other tribes camped around the tabernacle. It is worth noting that this census was taken after the Israelites had spent about a year in the wilderness. This can be deduced by comparing this passage with other scriptures, such as Exodus 19:1 and Exodus 40:17. The purpose of this census was to prepare the Israelites for their upcoming journey through the wilderness. They needed to know the number of individuals in each tribe who were fit for war in order to ensure that they were adequately prepared for any potential battles they might face. The twelve chosen captains were responsible for counting the individuals in their respective tribes and reporting back to Moses and Aaron. It is interesting to note that the book of Numbers gets its name from this census. The word "Numbers" is a translation of the Greek word "Arithmoi," which means "numbers" or "counting." The book of Numbers is also sometimes referred to as the "Book of the Wilderness," as it documents the Israelites' journey through the wilderness towards the promised land. Numbers chapter 1 provides us with important information about the Israelites' census and their preparations for their journey through the wilderness. This chapter sets the stage for the rest of the book of Numbers and highlights the importance of being prepared for whatever challenges lie ahead.
