BEMIḎBAR (NUMBERS) 4 - DUTIES OF THE PRIESTS

In this chapter...

Numbers chapter 4 gives us an account of God's commands to Moses regarding the numbering of the Levites, who were responsible for the service of the tabernacle. The chapter provides details on the ages at which the Levites were to be numbered, their specific duties, and the numbers of each clan. God instructed Moses to number the Levites who were between the ages of thirty and fifty, as they were deemed fit for the service of the tabernacle. The duties of the Levites were divided among three clans: the Kohathites, the Gershonites, and the sons of Merari. The Kohathites were responsible for the care and transportation of the most holy objects in the tabernacle, including the ark of the covenant, the table of showbread, the lampstand, and the altars. They were to be numbered from the age of thirty until the age of fifty, and their number was 2,750. The Gershonites were tasked with the care and transportation of the curtains and coverings of the tabernacle, as well as the screens for the entrance to the tabernacle courtyard. They were also to be numbered from the age of thirty until the age of fifty, and their number was 2,630. The sons of Merari were responsible for the care and transportation of the frames, bases, and other supporting structures of the tabernacle. They were also to be numbered from the age of thirty until the age of fifty, and their number was 3,200. Overall, the total number of Levites between the ages of thirty and fifty who were responsible for the service of the tabernacle was 8,580. It is important to note that this number only includes those who were able to serve, and not the entire population of Levites.
